The learners within this lesson are 6th and 7th graders in the Johnston CSD, Iowa. The computer skills that the students have previous to my class vary drastically. The skills that are incorporated with the class are designed to meet standards and benchmarks within the district and the state of Iowa. Each Iowa student must graduate with the 21st century skills necessary for a productive and satisfying life in a global knowledge-based environment. (Iowa Department of Education, 2010) This will be tested through project-based activities that can be assessed through rubrics and skill testing. Each student will communicate their story board to the teacher and to a peer so that they have a chance to visually, auditory and have a peer check through their thinking process. The Iowa core states that students should be able to use critical thinking and problem solving (Iowa Department of Education, 2010), while completing technological assignments. The tutorial will be a visual based tutorial which will allow the students who have difficulty reading to make connections through visual aides. The process will also be explained auditory as well, which will allow the learners multiple chances to comprehend and complete the given assignment. The students have the opportunity to use eMac computers that are one generation old. Each student has their own computer station every time they enter my classroom. The computers are imaged with several programs all of which the students have complete access to use for their assignments within the classroom. These programs are typically programs the students are not familiar with which then creates learning opportunities for the students. Each class has its own dynamic and having 14 sections there are several different 504 plans as well as special education accommodations. The lab is set up in rows however; the school has a LanSchool system, which allows me to interact with individual students from my computer. As previously stated, multiple resources will be used to create a lesson that allows each student to reach their full potential whether it is visual, auditory, written, digital copy, they will all be available.
